In May 2006, I decided to hike the Grand Canyon. I felt like I was in good enough shape, and, as they say, there is no time like the present.
I’ve made up a detailed website where I discuss the trip. It contains a lot of pictures. But, more importantly, I kept a detailed journal of the entire trip. I’ve typed up the journal and put it online, with lots of links to appropriate pictures. Hopefully you’ll find it entertaining. To get there, just go to the above link and click on itinerary/journal. Then you can jump to the excerpt from first day’s journal entry.
I’d recommend a Grand Canyon hike to anyone. I had been there once before, but stayed on the Rim. Getting “below the rim” is a wonderful experience.

Hi! I am a senior majoring in graphic design. One of my classes requires us to pick a topic and then do a large project related to it. I decided to do a book about the Grand Canyon. It is going to be designed like a journal. I found your journal/website and I loved your entries and photographs. I was wondering if I could use some of your pictures/entries in my book?

Hi, I am a high school senior and i am planning a hiking trip out to the grand canyon with a friend. However i am from the east coast and have never seen the canyon but merely have read articles of how difficult it is to hike. Both me and my friend have done numerous long distence hikes in the white mountains of new hampshire and the adirondacks of new york. We are also both physically fit as we are both cross country runners. I was wondering if you would believe that we would be skilled enough to do a long distance hiking/camping trip in the grand canyon.

Sam,
It sounds to me like you would be fine, as long as you aren’t stupid. You need to do your research on the time of year that you plan to be there so you know what to expect. Some parts of the year have a lot of rain. Most don’t. There’s a good 50-60 degree temperature difference between the rim and the bottom, so you have to plan appropriately. I was last there in May, and we were seeing 116 degrees at the bottom. That’s hot. And May isn’t the hottest part of the year, by any stretch.
Don’t overestimate your abilities. Make sure you are ready for it, have the right supplies, and, most of all, have fun! I’d recommend hiking the canyon to anyone that’s able, and you’ll see things that you can’t even imagine.
Let me know how it turns out!

Just wanted to drop you a line and let you know that I really enjoyed reading your GRCA journal. I’m going on the same trip w/Bob & Campus Rec pretty soon so it was nice to read about some of the logistics for the specific trip. We’re doing the same route but opposite direction.
I’m nervous about my physical fitness and am tracking my progress with that (and the trip) at the blog I’ve linked to. Feel free to comment on anything you think would help me better prepare.
Thanks again for “publishing” your journal (and pics!!).
