We had a plummer out today and I was right. It was tree roots. However, we have to wait another day until they can get to it. They removed the toilets from both bathrooms and we arent alowed to run the water. This stinks. No showers for another day and not pot to pee in. Literaly.

Hi,

I'm a renter, we live in a duplex. Our neighbor also experiances the same problem when we do. Twice now we have had the sewer back up from the downstairs bathroom. My husband snaked it the first time going from the pipe under the house moving upward. This time he went from the downstairs shower and realized that he possibly tore up the seal from the toilet in the process.

My thought is that it is tree roots. My husband says its just blocked. I will contact my landlord to get some professional help.

But I think Im right.

I have owned a home for 21 years and every three years this problem has occurred. You simply must go to this site and read. I am currently installing the PVC pipes and will use the copper sulfate!!!

Boy, does this sound familiar! I just paid $775 to have my drains from the bathroom to the street cleaned out. The first $125 was a plumber who didn't think my 2" access pipe in the basement was adequate and wanted to dig up the yard and put in a 4". NOPE! So I called Rescue-Rooter and two charming Serbian brothers did a great job. (I even have a tape of the inside of my drain now. woohoo. There's an expensive movie!!) Only part of my prob was tree roots, most was toilet paper if you can believe that. 90' of drain. So much for dissolvable. As I say, "There's only one thing worse than owning a house -- not owning a house."
Plumbing is one problem u can't ignore. I feel your pain. Tamara, in Oregon.

I rented the power auger ($40 for 4 hours from Rental City) and, while it did find some small root bundles starting to form, it didn't really find any blockages.

So, I probably didn't need to rent one in the first place. Live and learn. Seems like I always have to go to extremes once and then I think about the problem and come up with various tests that I should have done in the first place that would have prevented me from ever going to extremes.

Anyway, the problem was isolated to the bath tub. I took apart the trap right underneath the tub, and it was fine, so the slow drain was right near the bath tub itself. I put a plunger on the bath tub drain and attempted to pull the blockage back up (as you are supposed to do with a plunger) and then plunged back down hard a few times. Problem solved. Water is draining freely. Whatever it was has moved on out.
